Surprisingly, in an experiment, people who spun the number 10 guessed lower estimates, while those who spun 65 guessed higher — even though the number was random.
This is called anchoring, where irrelevant information influences our judgment.
Another common bias is the availability heuristic, where we judge the likelihood of events based on how easily examples come to mind.
For instance, dramatic plane crashes seem more frequent than they are because they’re memorable, while common car accidents feel less risky since they get less attention.
