Let Your Values Lead You

Are you leading followers or are you leading leaders?

In Turn the Ship Around, David Marquet contrasts two leadership styles: the traditional Leader-Follower model and his transformative Leader-Leader approach.

1. The Leader-Follower model relies on a single authority figure making decisions while others execute orders, often leading to disengagement and underused potential. 2. In contrast, the Leader-Leader model empowers everyone to take ownership and make decisions, fostering competence, clarity, and accountability throughout the team.

The Importance of Human Needs in the Workplace

It's not just about getting paid at work. We all want to feel valued, secure and part of something bigger.

  • Valued: We all want to feel that we are competent and have something unique to contribute with.
  • Connected: Our desire to feel we are connected to a greater purpose and know that our unique work has meaning.

Values vs Purpose

When we operate within our values, we run the risk of not being fully satisfied even when we achieve success. It's not just the end result that matters, but also the journey we take to get there. Year after year, I was achieving my career goals, yet I still wasn't completely satisfied. It felt as though I was not fulfilling my own purpose, but rather someone else's. Despite choosing my own goals, there was something inauthentic about it. It wasn't until I did a values assessment on myself that I realized the way I was reaching these targets each year was not truly aligned with who I am.

What Does That Have To Do With Empowerment?

It's important to know who we are and what we value. Self-assessments help shape our identity and give us the spark we need to act on our goals. Feedback and external support may not be enough and paint the full picture, we also need to find our own spark. My career counselor and I recently discussed this and realized that my next step was clear, but I needed to find the spark within myself to make it happen. I discovered that my personal operating style was the key to igniting that spark.

The world if full of “what needs to be done” kind of ideas. But it’s the “how” that makes an idea unique. Because “how” is about ourselves, our vision and our values.
