Trait psychology aligns you along five dimensions that describe universal aspects of differences between people. These are:<ol><li>Open to experience vs those who are more closed.</li><li>Conscientiousness vs those with a more careless approach to life.</li><li>Extroversion vs more introverted people</li><li>Agreeable individuals vs those not agreeable.</li><li>Neurotic individuals vs those who are more stable.</li></ol>

Trait psychology

The five dimensions of trait psychology have implications for our well-being. For example: <ul><li>Openness and conscientiousness are good predictors of life success. Open people achieve success through being audacious, and conscientious people by sticking to deadlines.</li><li>Extroversion and agreeableness are both conducive to working well with people.</li></ul>

The implications of trait psychology

Extroverts need stimulation by finding exciting things, such as loud noises, parties and social events. They like to have a lot of eye contact, they use more diminutive terms when they meet somebody. They prefer simple, black and white language. Introverts are more likely to spend time in a quiet space where they can reduce stimulation. They may be misinterpreted as antisocial, but that is not necessarily true. You may simply realize that you do better with less stimulation. Introverts prefer contextually complex sentences. As a result, they sometimes talk past each other.

Extroverts and introverts communicate differently

We also have free traits where we act out of character. You're very agreeable, but act disagreeably in order to advance a personal project in your life. It may relate to your kid, where you've been to hospital but they still don't know what's wrong. Or it could be your mom.  You may be an introvert but have a core project that makes you act in an extroverted way. So, don't ask people what type they are. Instead, ask them what are the core projects in their life.

Who are you, really? The puzzle of personality | Brian Little

When you look in a mirror, the face looking back at you isn't the face that everybody else sees. It's a reversed, somewhat distorted image.  The True Mirror was invented by a brother and sister team in New York. They discovered if you put two mirrors together at right angles and remove the seam, the images bounce off each other. This is what other people see when they look at you.  When you look in a regular mirror, you look for reassurance that you're beautiful, young, or tidy. When you look in a True Mirror, you see yourself differently. You look for revelation, not for reassurance.

How other people see you

When you look at truly remarkable individuals, not monetarily successful, but people achieving what they set out to do, you'll find that the one thing they have in common is that they have nothing in common. They have managed to find their unique gift and put that at the service of their goals. We often refer to these people as larger than life.  It is remarkable to see them in the full flow of their humanity. They shine, they gleam. However, most of us don't take up nearly the space the universe intended for us.

Being unique

Your job is not to copy remarkable individuals. Your task is to be as unlike them as you can possibly be. You have to be as good at being you as they are at being them. So, ask yourself, 'Who do you think you are?'  Just be yourself, because when you're yourself, you're fabulous.

Who do you think you are?

Where you were born, when you were born, and to whom you were born all have a particular influence or impact on how you become who you are.  Figure out what you expect from life and what life expects from you. A good starting point where you were fantastic at being yourself is when you were a kid under five.<ul><li>As a kid, you don't know how to disguise your differentness.</li><li>As you grow older, society's archetype emerges, and you become more self-conscious and less good at being yourself.</li><li>When you're wrinkly, you are also good at being yourself. You become less compromising and more honest.</li></ul>

How to be yourself

We are authentic when we're very young and when we're old, but in the middle, we develop the "I complex." The hourglass model helps you figure out which "I" you mean when you say "I".  <ul><li>If you have a superiority complex, you think you're the most important person in the room.</li><li>If you have an inferiority complex, you suffer from an over-modest self-regard.</li><li>Both are signs of a fragile ego.</li></ul>A third way is a made-up word called 'interiority. ' where you know that nobody can be like you. Other people have their things, but you have yours. Theirs can never compare to yours.

The hourglass effect

When you figure out how to be yourself, it's incredibly liberating. You're not just somebody's boss or somebody's mom. You're yourself. While you can never be perception-less, you can be perception-free. Tune into what you would like everybody else to think of you. It's not about being fake but about potential.

Your adaptive personality

You're already different. Your job is to figure out how and then become more of that.At certain times, your life will lend itself to change. It will make change quicker and deeper. These are intervals of possibility. You meet a stranger at a bar, or your boss offers you a new job. You know if you make the change the speed of your life will change. Some of these intervals of possibility are catastrophic. Someone you love will get sick, or you'll get sick, or you'll get fired, or a tsunami happens.

On the one extreme of your ego, you feel on top of the world. On the other extreme, you have days where nothing works. Your legs don't work, your mouth doesn't work. Your entire life is about building a stable relationship with your ego. Your challenge is to take the ego from its dominant position and put it in service to yourself. That's when it becomes useful. In order to do that, you have to find the point in the middle of those two extremes. The confidence that comes from there is what you're after.

Your ego: What you think of you

You may not be as big a message as Gandhi's but your life has to be your message. So, when you think about your identity and what it means to be alive, you're not your thoughts. You can't be your feelings. You're not what you have, nor what you do. You're not even who you love or who loves you. There's something underneath that. If you can tap into that, you'll never feel superfluous again.

Impact bias is the tendency to overestimate the hedonic impact of future events.For example, consider two groups of people where one group won the lottery, and the other group became paraplegics. Data shows people of both groups are equally happy a year after the event.  A recent study suggests that major life traumas that happened over three months ago had no impact on happiness.

In 1642, Sir Thomas Brown wrote that he is the happiest man alive. "I have that in me that can convert poverty to riches, adversity to prosperity, and I am more invulnerable than Achilles. Fortune hath not one place to hit me. " All humans have the same remarkable notion. We can think of it as a psychological immune system that helps us change our views of the world so we can feel better about the world in which we find ourselves.

<ul><li>Natural happiness is what we get when we obtain what we want.</li><li>Synthetic happiness is what we make when we don't get what we want. </li></ul>In our society, we strongly believe that synthetic happiness is of an inferior kind. However, synthetic happiness is as real and enduring as natural happiness. Studies show that when we get what we didn't want, our liking for the owned object increases and our liking for the unowned object decreases. That's the synthesis of happiness.

Synthesising happiness

All human beings have this capacity to synthesize happiness, but some can do it more effectively.<ul><li>Freedom - the ability to make up your mind and change your mind - is a friend of natural happiness because it allows you to choose the one you would most enjoy. </li><li>However, the freedom to choose and make up your mind is the enemy of synthetic happiness. </li></ul> The psychological immune system works best when we are totally stuck because then we will find a way to be happy with what we have. When we still have options available, we will always wonder if we have made the best choice.

The ability to synthesize happiness

In a Harvard study, students could join one of two photography courses where they can also develop two of their best photos, one for them and the other for headquarters. <ul><li>They could join the course where they had four days to decide which photo they wanted to keep.</li><li>They could join the course where they had to make up their mind right away.</li></ul>Sixty-six percent of students preferred the course where they could change their minds, meaning they chose to be deeply dissatisfied because they didn't understand the conditions under which synthetic happiness grows.

The importance of understanding synthetic happiness

William Shakespeare said, "Tis nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so. Adam Smith, the father of modern capitalism, said, "The great source of both the misery and disorders of human life seems to arise from overrating the difference between one permanent situation and another... The person under the influence of any of those extravagant passions is not only miserable in his actual situation, but is often disposed to disturb the peace of society in order to arrive at that which he so foolishly admires."

Our desires are often overblown. Of course, some things are better than others, but when our preferences drive us too hard and too fast because we overrate the difference between the two, we risk sacrificing things of real value.  When our ambition is bounded, we're prudent and thoughtful. When our ambition is unbounded, it can lead us to lie, steal, cheat, and hurt others.

The surprising science of happiness | Dan Gilbert

“The trick to learning more and having more success is finding the right way to frame the learning process.”

It describes the process of focusing on the princess and not the pits, to stick with a task and learn more.
The focus is about beating the game, not about how dumb you might look. And as a direct result of that attitude—of learning from but not being focused on the failures—we got really good and we learned a ton in a really short amount of time.
When you frame a challenge or a learning process in this way, you actually want to do it. It feels natural to ignore the failures and try again.

The Super Mario Effect

When 50,000 of Mark Rober's 3 million YouTube subscribers participated in a basic coding challenge, the data all pointed to what Rober has dubbed the Super Mario Effect. The YouTube star and former NASA engineer describes how this data-backed mindset for life gamification has stuck with him along his journey, and how it impacts the ways he helps (or tricks) his viewers into learning science, engineering, and design. Mark Rober has made a career out of engineering, entertainment, and education. After completing degrees in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University and the University of Southern California, Rober joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. In his nine years as a NASA engineer, seven of which were on the Mars rover Curiosity team, Rober worked on both the Descent Stage (the jet pack that lowered the Rover to the surface) and some hardware on the Rover top deck for collecting samples. In 2011, Rober’s iPad-based Halloween costume helped launch both his creative costume company, Digital Dudz, and his YouTube channel, which now boasts 3 million subscribers and 400 million views. His videos focus on creative ideas and science- and engineering-based pranks and activities. Rober is a regular guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!". Today, he does research and development work for a large technology company in Northern California, where he lives with his wife and son. The Super Mario Effect - Tricking Your Brain into Learning More | Mark Rober | TEDxPenn

Organizations have implemented changes that once felt impossibly far off:<ul><li>Working from home: While the pandemic upended many jobs that could be done only in person, managers learned that many other roles could be done very effectively from home.</li><li>Teaching online: Schools shifted very quickly from in-person to remote or hybrid learning. </li><li>Remote health care: Doctors pivoted quickly to remote appointments. As is usual for many innovations, those who were already doing some work virtually, such as psychologists, made the transition more easily than those who had never done so. </li></ul>

The pandemic unleashed unprecedented levels of change

Although managers in the past year and a half opened up to the idea of having people work from home, many still harbor doubts about its effectiveness.Some jobs can be done just as productively at home — such as coding or writing. Highly motivated workers are more likely to thrive outside of a supervisor’s direct vision than others. Jobs measured by output rather than input are more amenable to remote work. Other jobs will require more thought about where they can be done and why they are designed the way they are.

The productivity of remote workers

Unfortunately, many HR organizations thrive on standardization. The concern is that special treatment, such as offering benefits that differ from what’s offered to others in the same role, can open the door to favoritism and bias, neither of which is acceptable.However, companies have always made exceptions in special circumstances. What’s new is that now organizations need to recognize the need to give everyone special treatment, within boundaries.The one-size-fits-all approach also fostered a culture of hiding. People would take the flexibility they needed and hope they didn’t get caught. At best, the hiding was stressful. At worst, it could encourage a culture of dishonesty or disrespect.

Should the same rules apply to everybody?

To access top technical talent, companies opened offices near universities or in cities known for their high-tech cultures (and often their high costs of living). Others located in areas focused on their industries, such as fashion in New York or finance in London.The past year has begun to call that assumption into question. Engineers from high-cost, high-density locations like San Francisco and Seattle found that they could work very effectively from other cities and even small towns, and many do not want to return. Companies found that they can access talent well beyond their commuting zones if they are willing to allow remote work.

The need to locate where the talent is

It was common well before the pandemic. Employees did their day jobs and then worked other jobs part-time to earn extra money or pursue their passions.With staff members in the office and using company computers, it was reasonable to assume that work happening onsite was mostly related to the company. When employees work remotely, the challenge becomes more complex. The point is not to mistrust employees. Rather than installing Big Brother-like monitoring, it is far better to design jobs to make productivity more transparent and then ensure that employees find the work meaningful.

The concept of a side gig

It is essential to balance the preferences of employees with the needs of the company. You are paying people to work, and you need to ensure that investment pays off. However, recent years have shown workers that they do not need to follow work rules that were established before the internet. The most talented and productive people have more flexibility in whom they want to work for and are thus more demanding about the conditions they want to work under. People in all occupations are questioning whether to accept work conditions that feel unnecessarily stressful.

Rethinking Assumptions About How Employees Work

The benefit of being an overthinker is that we become natural observers, are able to understand the atmosphere of a room, watch people's micro-movements, listen to their language and tone. We can consider a question from various angles in a short time.
This puts us at an advantage as we can anticipate problems. We often know what is going on with people before they are ready to articulate it.

The benefits of being an overthinker

Overthinkers have to be very careful to have boundaries and time off because they are more inclined to burnout. They also have to be careful not to do other people's thinking/ memory storage for them. Uncontrolled overthinking can cause anxiety. There is a difference between ruminating on something without looking for a resolution and turning something over in your mind to learn something valuable from it.

Overthinking can be exhausting

Overthinking can be very enriching, but stressful situations can send the overthinker into overdrive. Tips to help bring back focus: <ol><li>Yoga can help quieten the mind.</li><li>Challenge your brain in a soft-focus way, such as counting back in threes from 100.</li><li>Repetitive tasks are relaxing, such as running, knitting, sewing, or rhythmic music.</li><li>If you feel overwhelmed, concentrate on the next five minutes. "What do I need right now? What can I see?"</li><li>Find something safe that needs minimal planning to help release adrenaline.</li></ol>

Why I’m glad that I’m an ‘overthinker’

Jackie - his real name - was born in Algeria on 15 July 1930. Some consider him as one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century.
Part of thinking like Derrida is taking the things we take most for granted, such as our identity and language, and looking for assumptions, contradictions, and absences.

Thinking like Jacques Derrida (1930-2004)

In 1967 Jacques Derrida introduced a new method to philosophy named deconstruction.
It is the idea that if something is constructed, it can be de-constructed. Not just things like chairs, cars and houses but also concepts such as truth, justice, and God. Derrida reasoned that these concepts we assume as natural are culturally constructed.

Deconstructionism

Deconstruction is not destruction. The concept or object is still there. To think deconstructively is not only to question accepted truths but to ask in whose interests it is if they are accepted.
Jacques Derrida was fascinated by the many factors that went into constructing a concept and the final act of construction itself: the belief that any concept is coherent and has a single fixed meaning and that this meaning is true, pure and unconstructed. He called the belief that coherence is a measure of truth, the 'metaphysics of presence'.

The ‘metaphysics of presence’

A text can be anything, a book, a movie, a recording.
<ul>
<li>Start by finding a silent space.</li>
<li>Next, find something to deconstruct: a poem, a timetable, a shopping list, philosophy, this text.</li>
<li>Start deconstructing. How is the text regarded? Question accepted truths, and in whose interest it is that they are accepted.</li>
<li>Look for places within the text that contradict each other. (Films may provide ample examples.)</li>
<li>Don't listen to what the author says. Trust your own analysis of a text.</li>
</ul>

Deconstruct a text to understand it

<ul>
<li>Derrida thought there was no true assessment of a text. The dominant assessment tells us about the conditions around the text rather than the text itself.</li>
<li>To think like Derrida means looking at a text, finding what it is trying to promote, then looking in the opposite direction. </li>
<li>Look for contradictions and consider what they mean.</li>
<li>A more subtle way of looking at a text is to see what happens if you look at one text through another interpretation. (What role does race play in the Marvel movies?)</li>
</ul>

Treat every text with suspicion

The words and concepts we use, including the words in our mind we mistake for thinking, emerge from the culture around us. 
No work can be pure in itself. Deconstruction is always happening in any work, and looking closely reveals how a text is happening and how the creator has pretended it isn't. For example, books like Landscape With Landscape (1985) by Gerald Murnane continually draw the readers' attention to the fact that they're reading a novel but can't just get lost in the story.

“Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.”

“If you don’t change your beliefs, your life will be like this forever. Is that good news?”

Consider how you’re doing in the following areas:<ul><li>Finances. Are you feeling ﬁnancial pressure in your life? Do you have all the things you need or really want? How much money do you have in savings? Do you have the income you desire? Is that income secure?</li><li>Relationships. Are your relationships satisfying? </li><li>Health. Are you taking good care of yourself? </li><li>Fun & Adventure. Are you doing the things you really want to do?</li><li>Any other aspect of your life in which you’re experiencing dissatisfaction. </li></ul>If you’re not pleased with your life, a limiting belief could be the cause.

Challenging areas in your life 

Make a list of all of your beliefs, good and bad.Examples related to money:<ul><li>I’ll never be wealthy.</li><li>Rich people are dishonest.</li><li>I’ll never have enough money to have a nice house.</li><li>If I’m rich, people will try to steal from me.</li><li>My friends will treat me diﬀerently if I have a lot of money.</li></ul>It will be diﬃcult to make a lot of money if you believe these things.

Challenging beliefs

Order all your limiting beliefs you have identified, in order, from the belief having the greatest negative impact to the least.Now that you have a list of your limiting beliefs and have them in order, it’s time to start dealing with them.

<ul><li>Read the belief out loud and ask yourself: “Do I really know that this is true?”</li><li>Ask yourself where that belief came from.</li><li>Simply state to yourself: “I choose not to believe this anymore. It’s not true.” Look for supporting evidence.</li><li>Create a new belief that serves you. </li><li>Measure yourself. How do you feel about your new beliefs? Is your behavior changing?</li><li>Go back to your list of limiting beliefs. As you experience new things, new limiting beliefs will show up.</li></ul>
