Watching a baby babble, play and interact with others can provide useful insight into what their cognitive ability might be like decades later, according to new University of Colorado Boulder research published in the journal PNAS. The study of more than 1,000 twins found that tests as early as 7 months of age can help predict performance on cognitive measures at age 30. It also found that an infant’s environment plays a more significant role in shaping life-long cognition than scientists realized. It could even influence risk of dementia later in life, the authors said.

7 Months To 30 Years Ahead

Similar to “IQ,” general cognitive ability (GCA) is a single, composite measure of a person’s capacity to learn, reason, understand and problem-solve. Prior research has shown that much of our GCA is established by childhood. Give an 8-year-old a battery of tests to determine their GCA and their score will look remarkably similar at age 30. Measures of intelligence at age 20 are highly correlated with those at age 62, and IQ doesn’t change much between age 11 and 90.

General Cognitive Ability (GCA) Across Our Lifetime

Few scientists however looked back further to see what — if anything—signals in infancy can tell us about cognition in adulthood and old age.Gustavson and senior author Chandra Reynolds, a professor of psychology and neuroscience, looked at data from 1,098 participants in the Colorado Longitudinal Twin Study. The university’s Institute of Behavioral Genetics (IBG) launched the study in 1985, enrolling baby twins from Colorado’s Front Range to assess the role that genes vs. environment play in various aspects of development.

GCA In Infancy, With The Help Of Twins

As early as 7 months old, researchers assessed 7 measures of cognition, including vocalization, ability to stay on task, and “novelty preference” — whether the infants preferred to play with new toys over ones they were familiar with. Age-appropriate cognitive assessments have been done at five points, so far.The team found that looking at cognitive tests in infancy could predict about 13% of the variance in scores at age 30.Two measures —novelty preference and task orientation—were the strongest predictors. This early life “signal” is not huge, the authors note.

“We certainly do not want to imply that cognition is somehow fixed by seven months old. But the idea that a very simple test in infancy can help predict the results of a very complicated cognitive test taken 30 years later is exciting.”

To explore what role genetics vs. environment plays, the study compared GCA score differences between identical twins, who share 100% of their genes, and fraternal twins, who only share half of their genes. In general, if there is greater similarity among identical twins than fraternal twins, this suggests that genes play a strong role in that trait.

Nature, Nurture Or Both? What Do Twins Say?

As expected, genes played a big role in influencing general cognitive ability, with genetic influences measured by age 7 accounting for about half of the variation in scores at age 30.But environment also had a significant and lasting impact.One of the most exciting findings was that 10% of the variability in adult cognitive ability was explained by environmental influences before year one or two. The older the children got, the more influence genes had and the less environment had.This suggests that even the pre-preschool environment matters.

Twins Say It’s Both, And Nurture Enters Early

Senior author Chandra Reynolds, who studies age-related diseases including Alzheimer’s and dementia, says the findings could have implications not only for how youth do in school or how adults perform at work but also how prone they may be to age-related cognitive decline.

Can Nurture In Infancy Affect Cognitive Decline In Old Age?

Cognitive aging is a life-long process, not just something that begins in mid-life. It could be that certain interventions, like strong educational foundations in early life could help maximize what people are capable of and help them keep that cognitive gas in the tank for as long as possible.

The study also confirms that “polygenic scores” can be a useful tool.Polygenic scores are single numbers that aggregate a person’s genetic variants to estimate predisposition to a trait, like intelligence. For the study, the researchers used genetic data from nearly 1 million individuals gathered via large datasets like 23 and Me to give each of the adult twins a polygenic score based on their own DNA, for cognitive ability. Remarkably, the twins’ scores closely matched what would be expected based on their tests when they were babies.

“There are thousands of genes that influence intelligence, so you are never going to find an ‘intelligence gene’, but we have found many with tiny effects that when put together can have an impact.”

“Studies like ours show us that both family-based and genomic-based datasets are valuable in answering questions about how genetic and environmental influences change across the lifespan.”

Early Baby Behavior Predicts Adult Cognition and Intelligence

Macquarie University researchers targeted a protein known as disulphide isomerase (PDI), most commonly found in the gelatinous liquid (cytoplasm) of cells, where it helps guide other proteins into correct formation. However, the team discovered that PDI can move through the cytoplasm and into the cell's control center – the nucleus – to repair breaks in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands.

A Protein That Helps Guide Other Proteins Into Correct Formation

With age, our body's ability to repair and maintain DNA strands can lead to premature aging and neurodegeneration, as well as increase the risk of developing serious diseases.Just like a cut on our skin needs to heal, the DNA in our cells needs constant repair. Every day, individual cells suffer thousands of tiny hits to their DNA – from both within our own bodies and from environmental stressors like pollution or UV light. Normally, the body responds quickly. But as we age, these repair mechanisms weaken, allowing damage to build up.

The DNA In Our Cells Needs Constant Repair

One of the biggest red flags of DNA damage is found in the brain. Mature neurons – nerve cells – are highly specialized and, unlike other cells, don't possess centrioles, the mechanism essential for cell division and replication. Because of this, our bodies can't simply repair DNA damage or get new undamaged neurons to replace them. It's one reason why scientists are particularly interested in neural stem cell therapies for brain injury and cognitive function.

Nerve Cells However Can’t Be Repaired Or Replaced

The scientists found that PDI, on the other hand, has the power to cross into the nucleus of a cell and repair damage, which would essentially extend the life and function of these very important microscopic systems.Brain cells are especially vulnerable. Unlike skin or blood cells, they don’t divide or renew – so any damage that builds up in them stays. And if the damage isn’t repaired, it can eventually lead to the death of these critical cells.

Unlike Other Cells, Brain Cells Don’t Divide Or Renew

Until now, scientists didn’t know why PDI sometimes appeared in the nucleus. For the first time, it’s shown that it acts like a glue or catalyst, helping to repair broken DNA in both dividing and non-dividing cells.Now, the team is looking at various methods of gene therapy using PDI on cells, including mRNA treatment to better direct PDI in DNA repair. The university team may be focused on motor neuron disease (MND), but it can be applied to all conditions where damaged DNA contributes to advancing neruodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

PDI: The Repair-It For All Cells

PDI has previously been identified as a menace in cancer treatment, with high levels of this protein found to protect tumor cells from attack. So while anti-aging therapies could target specific cells, such as neurons for anti-aging therapies, scientists may also be able to switch off the shielding abilities of PDI in tumors, making cancers more vulnerable to treatments such as chemotherapy.

PDI and Cancer: What It Does And What It May Do

PDI is like a double agent. In healthy cells, it repairs DNA and helps prevent disease. But in cancer, it gets hijacked – it ends up protecting the tumour instead of the body. That’s why understanding it fully is so important.

A protein found in our cells has emerged as a secret weapon against biological aging, acting like a glue to repair damaged DNA and ward off neurological degeneration including that seen in motor neuron, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Each period is involved in such peculiar circumstances, exhibits a condition of things so strictly idiosyncratic, that its conduct must be regulated by considerations connected with itself, and itself alone.Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help. It is useless to revert to similar circumstances in the Past. The pallid shades of memory struggle in vain with the life and freedom of the Present.

Hegel is quoted as saying  that “The only thing that we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history”. Here is what he actually said, in context - since context changes everything.

Hegel wrote this classic as an introduction to a series of lectures on the &quot;philosophy of history&quot; — a novel concept in the early nineteenth century. With this work, he created the history of philosophy as a scientific study. He reveals philosophical theory as neither an accident nor an artificial construct, but as an exemplar of its age, fashioned by its antecedents and contemporary circumstances, and serving as a model for the future. The author himself appears to have regarded this book as a popular introduction to his philosophy as a whole, and it remains the most readable and accessible of all his philosophical writings. Eschewing the methods of original history (written during the period in question) and reflective history (written after the period has passed), Hegel embraces philosophic history, which employs a priori philosophical thought to interpret history as a rational process. Reason rules history, he asserts, through its infinite freedom (being self-sufficient, it depends on nothing beyond its own laws and conclusions) and power (through which it forms its own laws). Hegel argues that all of history is caused and guided by a rational process, and God's seemingly unknowable plan is rendered intelligible through philosophy. The notion that reason rules the world, he concludes, is both necessary to the practice of philosophic history and a conclusion drawn from that practice.

Cynicism is not a neutral position — and although it asks almost nothing of us, it is highly infectious and unbelievably destructive. IIn my view, it is the most common and easy of evils. I know this because much of my early life was spent holding the world and the people in it in contempt. It was a position both seductive and indulgent.

Unlike cynicism, hopefulness is hard-earned, makes demands upon us, and can often feel like the most indefensible and lonely place on Earth. Hopefulness is not a neutral position either. It is adversarial. It is the warrior emotion that can lay waste to cynicism. Each redemptive or loving act, as small as you like… keeps the devil down in the hole. For years, we’ve heard that sugar is one of the main drivers behind the global rise in type 2 diabetes. But new research from Brigham Young University is changing the way we look at sugar. According to the findings, where our sugar comes from matters just as much as how much we consume.

Not All Sugars Are Created Equal

In the most extensive analysis of its kind, researchers from Brigham Young University and institutions in Germany examined data from over 500,000 people across multiple continents. Their discovery? Sugars from drinks like soda and even fruit juice were consistently linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Surprisingly, sugars from other sources did not show this same risk. In fact, some were even linked to a lower risk.

Sugar From Drinks VS Sugar From Solid Foods

Even after accounting for factors like body mass index, overall calorie intake, and several other lifestyle risk factors, the differences were striking:With each additional 12-oz serving of sugar-sweetened beverages (i.e., soft drinks, energy drinks, and sports drinks) per day, the risk for developing T2D increased by 25%. This strong relationship showed that the increased risk began from the very first daily serving with no minimum threshold below which intake appeared to be safe.

With each additional 8-oz serving of fruit juice per day (i.e., 100% fruit juice, nectars and juice drinks), the risk for developing T2D increased by 5%.Fruit juice, even with some vitamins and nutrients, is much less beneficial. Because of its high and concentrated sugar content, the researchers conclude that fruit juice is a poor substitute for whole fruits, which provide more fiber to support better blood glucose regulation.

The above risks are relative not absolute. For example, if the average person’s baseline risk of developing T2D is about 10%, four sodas a day could raise that to roughly 20%, not 100%.Comparatively, 20 g/day intakes of total sucrose (table sugar) and total sugar (the sum of all naturally occurring and added sugars in the diet) showed an inverse association with T2D, hinting at a surprising protective association.

Why drinking sugar would be more problematic than eating sugar may come down to the differing metabolic effects. Sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juice supply isolated sugars, leading to a greater glycemic impact that would overwhelm and disrupt liver metabolism, thereby increasing liver fat and insulin resistance.

The Metabolic Consequences of Liquid Sugar

On the other hand, dietary sugars consumed in or added to nutrient-dense foods, such as whole fruits, dairy products, or whole grains, do not cause metabolic overload in the liver. These embedded sugars elicit slower blood glucose responses due to accompanying fiber, fats, proteins, and other beneficial nutrients.

“This study underscores the need for even more stringent recommendations for liquid sugars such as those in sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juice, as they appear to harmfully associate with metabolic health,” Karen Della Corte, lead author and BYU nutritional science professor said. “Rather than condemning all added sugars, future dietary guidelines might consider the differential effects of sugar based on its source and form.”

A massive new study reveals that the source of sugar makes all the difference. While sugary drinks like soda and even fruit juice sharply increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, sugars in solid foods—especially nutrient-rich ones—may actually be less harmful or even protective.
